Origin of Out of My Gourd

I grew up in the same town as my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins from my mom's side. The grandkids spent a lot of time at Grandma & Grandpa's house - sometimes all at once, sometimes in smaller groups. Grandpa had a large vegetable garden and one year he grew some long-neck gourds. They decided to dry them and then the grandkids slowly began painting the gourds with Grandma. Grandpa would drill holes in them and we would make them into bird houses. We did all of this in the old barn that my grandparents had on their property. After we had a barn full of painted gourds, Grandma decided to put an ad in the local paper to host an "Out of Our Gourds" sale in the barn. The grandkids all put price tags on their gourds and we opened the barn up to sell our crafts one Saturday! Over time, we started getting into crafts other than gourds - I stacked and glued two terra cotta pots together (open ends facing each other) and painted it to look like Santa. Grandma would find old wood in the trees and would paint it to look like Santa, or Uncle Sam, etc. We crafted so many things! I learned everything I know about painting and crafting from my Grandma. Since it is just me now, no cousins, it is just "Out of My Gourd."
